Bringing Global Experience Home to Belfast

When Tony McGaharan decided to leave his role at one of the world’s biggest tech companies, he knew exactly where he wanted to begin his next chapter: home.

“I’m incredibly proud of this place,” says Tony, founder of People Playbook and a proud Belfast native. “It just makes tremendous sense to build the business from here, but work internationally.”

Tony’s story is one of global exploration, professional growth, and ultimately, a heartfelt return to his roots in Northern Ireland. Born and raised in South Belfast, Tony’s early years were spent on the Ormeau Road, attending Botanic Primary School and later Lagan College. But even from a young age, his curiosity and ambition took him far beyond the city limits.

At just sixteen, Tony embarked on his first overseas adventure, studying at a small private school in Albany, Upstate New York. “It really opened up my mind to all of the amazing opportunities that exist outside of home,” he reflects. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for learning and leadership, which he carried through his teacher training at Stranmillis College in Belfast and a study stint in northern Sweden.

Tony’s career took a major leap when he joined Google in Dublin, where he found a way to blend his love for education with people development. His journey with the tech giant led him to Singapore -his first time in Asia - where he continued to grow professionally and personally. After a few years in Southeast Asia, he moved to London, enjoying the vibrancy of the city but always feeling the pull of home.

That pull brought Tony back to Belfast in 2020, where he founded People Playbook - a company dedicated to empowering leaders and teams through engaging, fresh learning experiences.

For me, being back in Belfast is first and foremost about the community. But what I’ve loved is the ability to really create a business and thrive here. There’s just amazing talent and people.

From its base in Belfast, People Playbook now works with clients around the world, proving that global impact can start at home.

“There’s a tremendous spirit here of creativity, innovation, and a willingness to support one another,” Tony says. “That’s been the most meaningful change - coming home and feeling the support not just from friends and family, but from the business community too.”

Tony’s journey is a powerful reminder that returning home doesn’t mean stepping back - it can be the boldest step forward. With People Playbook, he’s building something that reflects both his global experience and his deep Northern Irish roots.
