Why 2026 might be the year you come home

We’re talking opportunities, lifestyle, connections – pretty great reasons why you should make the move, if you ask us!

Hot on the heels of our blog: A wee guide for moving to Northern Ireland here’s a few reasons why this year just might be the year to come on home!

So how do you know this is the right time? It might be when someone asks where you’re from, and you find yourself chatting a wee bit too long! Or maybe it’s a video of home popping up on your phone and suddenly you’re not just watching it…you’re remembering how it felt to be there.

Let’s face it - that quiet pull never really goes away.

And in 2026, Northern Ireland’s doing a pretty good job of giving you reasons to stop scrolling… and start seriously thinking about coming back.

A place that’s moving forward

Northern Ireland today isn’t the same place you left - it’s moving at pace, full of new energy, fresh ambition and (thankfully) a lot more going on. From booming tech and cyber hubs in Belfast to advanced manufacturing in the North West and a creative scene that’s properly thriving, opportunity isn’t something you need to chase across the world anymore… it’s right here at home.

And here’s the thing, what you’ve picked up along the way? It matters. The skills, the experience, the different ways of thinking you’ve gathered in Toronto, Sydney, London or Dubai - they’re not just transferable, they’re genuinely valued. There’s a real appetite for people who can bring a global perspective and help shape what comes next. So no, coming back isn’t a step backwards…it’s often a step into something bigger.

Add to that the fact that work itself has changed, and the picture gets even better. In 2026, you don’t need to live in a big-city postcode to have a global career. Remote and hybrid working mean you can stay connected to international companies while living somewhere that actually feels like home. That could mean finishing up your day and heading for a walk along the North Coast, swapping a two-hour commute for a fry with the family, or just having a bit more headspace to enjoy life outside of work. Because these days, it’s not just about where you work - it’s about how you live.

Have a read of our blog North West: A Connected Region | NI Connections to see exactly why the North West region isn’t just a place to work - it’s a place to thrive. Ready to make the move?

A quality of life that stacks up

There’s also a practical side to all this.

Compared to major international cities, Northern Ireland offers a more accessible cost of living, particularly when it comes to housing. That means choices open up. Space becomes possible. Your money works harder.

But it’s not just about affordability, it’s about what that affordability gives you. More time. Less stress. A better balance.

And let’s be honest, having a decent home, a bit of breathing room, and still being able to enjoy yourself at the weekend? You can’t beat that!

A food, drink and culture scene having a moment

If it’s been a while since you’ve been back, there’s a good chance you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Northern Ireland’s food and drink scene has come into its own. Award-winning restaurants, independent coffee shops, local produce being celebrated properly, and a hospitality sector that knows exactly how to make you feel welcome.

There are so many great benefits to moving away, like discovering new cuisines, learning from incredible international talent and experiencing different ways of living and working. But it’s only when you find your way home that you realise just how special the support, community and opportunities in Northern Ireland really are.

While we love seeing our people cooking up a storm on the world-stage, we love it even more when they choose Northern Ireland as their place to shine. Read our blog on 5 diaspora-owned restaurants worth visiting in Northern Ireland and see how Northern Ireland's food scene is thriving - and our diaspora are a big reason why.

Add to that a packed calendar of festivals, gigs, theatre and creative events, and there’s a real sense of energy across the region. Did you know that for the first time, Belfast has been named a European City of Sport for 2026! We invest in sport, support our elite athletes, love our local sports clubs…impressed yet? Curious to know more? Check out our blog on why Belfast was named a European City of Sport 2026!

We also can’t forget that Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is coming to Belfast from Sunday 2 to Sunday 9 August 2026 (and 2027!!) You’ll find everything from big-name headliners to rising local talent, all woven into a soundtrack of culture, connection and plenty of craic. Whether you’ve grown up with trad or you’re discovering it for the first time, there’s something special about experiencing it here.

People who just get you

To be fair, there’s no real substitute for this one.

It’s the humour. The openness. The ability to start a conversation with someone you’ve never met and end up talking about who your granda knows.

There’s a sense of connection here that’s hard to replicate elsewhere and it’s something many people don’t fully appreciate until they’ve been away for a while.

Coming home often means slipping back into that way of life without even trying. Familiar, easy, and quietly reassuring.

For many, returning to Northern Ireland isn’t just about lifestyle or career, it’s about impact.

It’s about bringing something back with you. Ideas, experience, perspective. Whether that’s through your work, mentoring others, supporting local initiatives, or simply being part of the community again.

There’s a sense that what you do here can shape things in a way that feels tangible.

And that’s a parful thing!

So… why 2026?

Because the timing feels right.
Because the opportunities are here.
Because the lifestyle is here.
Because the connections - both personal and professional - are here.

And because sometimes, that quiet feeling you get when you think about home isn’t just nostalgia… it’s a sign.

If you’ve been thinking about it - even just a wee bit - maybe this is your year.
