Our Place in Space tours Northern Ireland

Oliver Jeffers’ scale model of the solar system tours Derry, Belfast and the North Down coast.

Designed by artist Oliver Jeffers, in association with scientist Stephen Smartt, Our Place in Space is an out-of-this-world 10km three-dimensional sculpture trail in Northern Ireland. The trail includes an interactive AR app, and major learning and events programmes.

Our Place in Space is a playful experiment that asks: What happens to your perspective when you look back at earth from space? Our Place in Space invites participants to consider how we might better share and protect our planet in future.

The trail made its debut on the banks of the River Foyle in Derry~Londonderry between 22 April and 22 May 2022. The trail was a great success in Derry, with a successful Guinness World Record attempt for the most number of astronauts ever gathered together in one place.

The sculpture trail then moved on to Belfast and Divis/Black Mountain, a popular National Trust walking spot with outstanding panoramic views of Belfast Lough. The trail opened on 11 June, concluding on 10 July.

After a detour to Cambridge and Liverpool in the autumn, the trail will return to Northern Ireland with a final visit to the Ulster Transport Museum at Cultra. The trail will take in the North Down Coastal Path and will stretch through Crawfordsburn Country Park, finishing at Bangor Pier. This one final chance to wander around the giant mini solar system path will conclude on 26 March 2023.
