More than a city, it's home: Derry through the eyes of its Mayor

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr, Lilian Seenoi-Barr shares her deep connection to Derry, revealing the city's unique spirit, resilience, and exciting future as seen through the eyes of a true Derry Girl.

For the Mayor of Derry City and Strabane, Lilian Seenoi-Barr, this vibrant corner of Northern Ireland is far more than just a place on a map. It's the very fabric of life, a deeply personal connection woven with threads of history, resilience, warmth, and boundless creativity. She shares what makes Derry so uniquely special, both from a personal standpoint and through the lens of civic leadership.

"Derry is more than just a city to me. It’s my home, my community, and my heart. It’s a place where history and resilience meet warmth and creativity. Personally, Derry has embraced me and my family, offering us not just a place to live but a place to belong. As Mayor, I see that same welcoming spirit in every street, every community event, and every person who works tirelessly to make this city better. Derry is a city that never gives up, that keeps moving forward while holding onto the values that make it unique. That resilience, that determination, is what makes Derry so special."

Having journeyed from Kenya to make Northern Ireland home, the Mayor offers a profound perspective on the meaning of belonging. "Home, for me, is not just a place, it’s where you feel rooted, where you can make a difference, and where people hold you up when times are tough. Kenya will always be the land of my birth, the place that shaped my early years. But Derry is the place that shaped my future. I have lived here for 15 years, raised my family here, and worked alongside the most inspiring people. I consider myself a proud Maasai woman and a proud Derry Girl. My heart belongs to both places, but my daily life, my purpose, and my future are here in Derry."

A true Derry girl at heart

That deep connection has fostered a true sense of belonging and the Mayor considers herself a true  ‘Derry Girl at heart’! "Being a ‘Derry Girl’ isn’t about where you were born, it’s about a way of life, a sense of humour, and an unbreakable spirit. I’ve embraced everything from the city’s wit to its passion for justice, its music, and, of course, its love for a good cup of tea and a bit of craic. I share the same beliefs with Derry people when it comes to stand up for what’s right, to never take yourself too seriously, and to always look out for your community."

For the Mayor, it's the unique blend of culture, history, and community that makes Derry so captivating. "Derry is a city of storytellers, artists, and changemakers. The history here is rich and complex, but what I love most is how people channel that history into hope and action. Whether it’s the murals that tell our story, the music that fills our streets, or the community spirit that turns hardship into strength, Derry’s culture is alive and inspiring. The people make this place special. Bold, Kind, and always willing to fight for a better future."

This vibrant spirit has profoundly influenced the Mayor's journey as a leader, teaching her that leadership is not about titles, it’s about service. “I have learned so much from the people here, from those who have fought for civil rights to the young people shaping our future. This is a city that believes in justice, in standing up for those who need it most, and in never backing down from a challenge. That spirit has shaped my journey, pushing me to be a better advocate, a stronger leader, and, most importantly, someone who listens."

Looking to the future

The Mayor knows Derry is a city on the rise. "Derry is growing in exciting ways. The tech sector is booming, with a strong focus on AI, cybersecurity, and digital innovation. Our creative industries, film, music, and gaming are gaining international recognition. And, of course, our tourism and hospitality sectors continue to thrive, driven by our unique culture, history, and events."

Its strategic location further bolsters its potential. "Derry sits at a key crossroads, with access to both UK and EU markets. With strong transport links, a growing digital infrastructure, and a business-friendly environment, it’s the perfect place for companies looking to expand internationally. We also have a highly skilled workforce, thanks to our universities and colleges, making Derry an attractive hub for global investment."

The spirit of innovation is palpable throughout the city, from from the growth of the health and life sciences sector to cutting-edge digital projects. “The city’s Smart Derry initiative is positioning us as a leader in digital connectivity and AI. Meanwhile, our university is leading groundbreaking research in sustainability, healthcare, and technology. It’s an exciting time for development in Derry."

Come home!

For those in the Northern Irish diaspora considering a return, the Mayor has a clear message! "Come home. Derry is thriving, and there’s never been a better time to be part of its future. Whether you’re looking to start a business, raise a family, or reconnect with your roots, this city has so much to offer. There’s an energy here, a sense that something big is happening and we want you to be part of it."

Several key initiatives are paving the way for this bright future. "There are so many exciting initiatives happening right now. The growth of the digital and tech sectors, the expansion of our university, and major infrastructure projects will transform how we live and work. But I’m also excited about community-led projects; initiatives that put people at the heart of progress, like the Library of Things, Acorn Farm, my own youth engagement programme Our Guildhall Our Space, and our drive towards sustainability."

"I see Derry as a city that leads not just in Northern Ireland, but globally. A city that thrives on innovation, attracts investment, and creates opportunities for its people. But beyond business, I want Derry to be a city where everyone feels they belong. A city where young people see a future, where communities support each other, and where no one is left behind."

Hidden treasures

Even for those who call Derry home, there are hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. "There are so many, but one of my favourites is the Library of Things. It’s not just a space, it’s a movement for sustainability, community sharing, and skill-building. It’s proof that Derry is always innovating and finding ways to bring people together. And, of course, the people themselves are the city’s greatest hidden gem. You’ll never meet warmer, funnier, or more welcoming people anywhere else in the world."

Ultimately, the Mayor's hopes for Derry are deeply rooted in its enduring spirit. "I hope for a Derry that is bold, inclusive, and thriving. A city where opportunity isn’t limited by background, where young people feel excited about their future here, and where we continue to punch above our weight on the global stage. Most of all, I hope Derry remains what it has always been, a city with heart, where people look out for one another and never stop striving for better."

When asked to encapsulate Derry in just three words, the Mayor does not hesitate: "Resilient. Creative. Unstoppable."
