Representatives from four major US Colleges were in Belfast this week for a two day visit ahead of the Northern Irish Connections Friendship Four ice hockey tournament in November.
If you’re not familiar with the event, here’s a quick explanation – four top US college ice hockey teams play against each other in Belfast for the ‘Belpot’ trophy for real NCAA league points.
Northern Irish Connections sponsors the event which is broadcast to millions of viewers across the USA and the rest of the world on Thanksgiving weekend.
The teams taking part in this year’s tournament are Clarkson University, RPI (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), Providence College and the University of Maine.
The event, now in it’s third year, is hosted at the SSE Arena and takes place over Thanksgiving weekend (24–25 Nov). As well as being well supported by local fans, the Northern Irish Connections Friendship Four event has brought business leaders, top academics, media attention and tourists to Northern Ireland.

Belfast wants to get smarter
Belfast City Council launched the Smart City framework along with a number of other stakeholders including Invest Northern Ireland who are offering support and funding via Collaborative Challenge.
