Plans for a new George Best themed hotel in Belfast city centre were unveiled recently.

‘The George Best Hotel’ is expected to have around 80 rooms and will be located in the heart of the city.

Liverpool–based developers, Signature Living purchased the old Scottish Mutual building on Donegal Square South for more than £6m earlier in 2017. The company who specialise in experiential hospitality expect to spend a further £15m on refurbishments.

Speaking at an event this week, Signature Living founder, Lawrence Kenwright says he hopes the hotel will be partially open by 22nd May 2018 to coincide with what would be the footballing legend’s 72nd birthday and officially opened by June 2018.

We are excited about the next 12 months as we continue to plan, prepare and deliver this new icon of Belfast. We feel we could have doors open by June 2018”, said Kenwright.

If you’re a Best fanatic and can’t wait that long then fear not. Incredibly you book a night in Best’s childhood home for £70 per night on Air B n B!

Located in Cregagh estate in east Belfast, George Best lived in the house with his family from January 1949 until he moved to Manchester United in the early sixties. He made the first of his 470 Utd appearances as a 17–year–old against West Bromwich Albion in September 1963.

Despite their son’s super–stardom, his parents continued to live in the same home throughout his football career and after. Following the death of ‘Dickie’ Best, George’s father, in 2008 the mid–terrace house was purchased by regeneration group, EastSide Partnership in 2011 who then restored it with memorabilia donated from the Best family.

So what can you expect from a stay at the Best family home?

According to it’s Air B n B page…

“George’s room has been restored and recreated as to how it would have looked in the 1950’s with items of memorabilia from his childhood as he grew up. Dotted around the house are family portraits, images from his football career and old school reports and letters kindly donated by the Best family.”

Judging by the abundance of five–star ratings on Air B n B, it certainly seems to live up to expectations.

A short bus journey from the city centre and just around the corner from Ulster Rugby’s Kingspan Stadium, the Best family home seems popular option for many visitors. There’s even a George Best trail you can do.
